New End Theatre, Hampstead, NW3

At A Glance

Complete refurbishment of the existing theatre, including the conversion of the auditorium to a 120 seat recital room, with new lighting and air conditioning.

In Depth

There has been a theatre on the site previously, built within the Mortuary of the New End Hospital, but that had fallen into disrepair, and none of the facilities worked. There was no bar, and the acoustics were unsatisfactory.

The original concrete box of the auditorium was tuned acoustically with angled hardwood panelling. A new oak boarded stage was provided, and new changing facilities for the performers were installed.

Outside the performance space, a bar was created on a new mezzanine level, new offices were installed over the whole of the auditorium, and the means of escape was upgraded, including provision of new hardwood entrance doors.
